Emmanuel Lepage Vallee 86d1b1c22c doc: Add a mandatory `@noreturn` for functions and methods.
The goal is to catch cases where the return value exists, but is
forgotten. There was a large enough number of them to turn this
into a real check. Initially, I just wanted to implement it to fix
the problems, then delete the code. But since this is so common, I
think it is worth the annoyance.

Fix composite widgets with top level container
When wrapping container widgets to create reusable composite widgets,
`drill` will be called twice on the same widget definition. The first
call happens within the wrapping function and applies the children
widgets fine. The second call happens when the composite widget is used,
but since there are no children widgets defined, the call to
`set_children` sets the existing child to `nil` instead.

Fixes #3213.

Jordan Christiansen c09e5b16b7 Correct the name of get_children's return value (#2927)
get_children's return value should not be called "The". That was a
mistake because ldoc requires a name for return values and parameters.
If a name isn't provided, it thinks the first word of the description
is the name.

Emmanuel Lepage Vallee cf0385af80 widget: Add an `:add_button()` method.
This is done now because a lot of code in `lib/` add buttons by manually
extracting buttons from awful.button. Instead of adding ugly code to

one.

Emmanuel Lepage Vallee b4ece0f053 doc: Use an explicit tag for all static functions.
This way their name doesn't get mangle by the broken magic. It will also

wibox: Stop monkey-patching the `get_children_by_id` function. (#2513)
Before this commit, it was added by `wibox.widget.base` if
`:setup()` is used. However it doesn't work for the `awful.popup`
because of the extra indirection.

This commit stops the monkey-patching and make sure the function
always exists. This doesn't prevent it from not working and in
the long run this should still be moved into the hierarchy.

However for now it makes the situation a lot more consistent and is a
quick band-aid without too much controversy.

Uli Schlachter 0857f6f1b5 Lua: Remove calls to add_signal()
The requirement to call add_signal() was added to catch typos. However, this
requirement became increasingly annoying with property::<name> signals and e.g.
gears.object allowing arbitrary properties to be changed.

All of this ended up in a single commit because tests/examples fails if I first
let add_signal() emit a deprecation warning.

Uli Schlachter 7bf2f17a8a Make gears.widget.{fit,layout}_widget more robust
This commit makes these methods invoke the method on a widget in a protected
context. Thanks to this, e.g. the wibox and other widgets are protected from
errors in a child widget.

Additionally, fit_widget() now assumes 0 if a widget's :fit() method didn't
provide a number.
