This makes the screen objects use our existing infrastructure for implementing
classes and objects with lua instead of hand-rolling an own version.
This results in some small API change: Screen objects no longer have an
add_signal() function and instead this function exists on the parent screen
class.

The bugs this fix are:
* Invalid request using nil as screen
* Stop messing indexes in the old screen
* Prevent c.screen <-> t.screen mismatch
* Prevent no tags being selected in the old screen
When a screen doesn't have any tags selected, then just tag the new client with
all of the screen's tags. That way, we don't lose clients.
Also, if we failed at coming up with tags for a client, don't completely untag
it. This means that it can keep its old tags if it had any.

This reverts commit bbe86e4e25. That commit caused
unintuitive, special behavior. Instead, when someone wants us to set a screen,
we really should do so.
This commit partly reverts commit b4c83d0e70.
Because the C code emits property::screen before manage, this caused
awful.tag.withcurrent() to run on a client before it really was being managed.
This then tagged the client. Because of this tag changes, awful.layout reacted
and ran the layout code. Because c.type wasn't set up at this point yet, the
client wasn't considered to be floating yet. This caused the client's geometry
to change and thus its floating geometry was messed up.

The current premise is that c.screen should be the same as
awful.tag.getscreen(t).
The addition in `ewmh.tag` appears to be the important part here,
changing the order in awful.rules.execute is (maybe) only for
consistency across the codebase.
By default, tag.history.restore switches between the previous history
states, which is not what should get done when deleting a tag.
Without this, deleting multiple tags in a row, will jump back to the
first/fallback tag, instead of the older history entries.
The current premise is that c.screen should be the same as

There is a strong hint that you are doing something wrong: You call
client.emit_signal(some_signal, c). Chances are high that this signal is

If a client gets moved to a screen without any selected tags, that client
disappears and it is non-trivial to get it back. Since this is unexpected and
annoying, make movetoscreen do nothing if the target screen has no tags
selected.

This allows to apply properties and callbacks to a client like
awful.rules.apply would do, without the matching part.
This is useful with the new startup notifications, and lets you apply
the same properties and callbacks from e.g. a manage signal handler.
This allow to spawn something, then apply some properties or rules when
the client show up ("manage").
This commit add:
* "startup_id" property for all clients object (immutable, can be nil)
* Second return value to awful.util.spawn() with the startup_id
* Update the documentation

Pressing CTRL+DELETE removes the visible history entry, if any, then moves to the next history entry (like pressing DOWN would do).
If the last history entry is removed the previous one is shown in the prompt (like pressing UP would do).
CTRL+DELETE works on history entries only: i.e. it has no effect on a command entered but not executed yet.
To implement above behaviour I added saving history table to file on Escape key press.

Restoring a previous history entry changes the tag history (in the
meaning of currently selected tags), and therefore should also emit the
tag::history::update signal.
A use case might be to automatically hide tags with no clients on them.

Instead of having the C code mess with which tags are selected, we now emit a
signal on the tag that says that something requested it to be selected. Lua can
then handle this by only switching tags on the correct monitor and by updating
the focus history correctly.

Ever since commit 6b2e4352b (from 2010!), awesome.spawn() doesn't have a screen
argument anymore and the extra argument from util.spawn was just ignored. Fix
the code and the luadoc for these functions.

When a client's geometry changes (and I consider the border width to be part of
the geometry here) and that client is one of fullscreen or
maximized_{horizontally,vertically}, make sure that the geometry as specified by
the state is still obeyed.
This also (accidentally) fixes things when a client gets moved to another
screen!

When we receive a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW request on the root window, we used to just
focus and raise the window. This didn't do much for clients which are on
non-selected tags.
Thus, this commit makes awesome emit request::activate on the client instead.
This is used in awful.ewmh to implement the old behavior again, but with
additionally marking the client as urgent if it isn't visible.
People who don't like this behavior can use client.disconnect_signal to disable
this behavior again. To make this really possible, awful.ewmh becomes a
"non-nil" module.

The default value for the second argument to :find() is 1, so nothing is changed
here. The third arguments disables pattern matching and instead gets us literal
interpretation of strings. This means that pattern characters like e.g. [, ] and
. don't get interpreted.

When an area is split in two, for example horizontally, one of the windows
should have height math.floor(previous height / 2) and the other
math.ceil(previous height / 2), to be certain that no gaps are left between the
windows.
For instance, if the first window has height h and the second window has height
math.floor(h / 2), the height of the third window should be math.ceil(h / 2)
instead of the same as for the second window.
So to compute the size of window n + 1 it’s necessary to remember the size of
window n - 1 as well as that of window n.

The activated property was added to tag objects between awesome 3.4 and 3.5.
This is used in the C code to keep tags alive even when nothing else refers to
it and includes a tag e.g. in some root window properties.
Thus, to get rid of a tag and to make the C code drop its reference to it, we
have to set activated to false in this function.

In case loading the theme failed and we don't have fg_normal or bg_normal, add
default values for these properties. All the other colors are only used if they
are defined, but these two always need to be defined.

When awesome restarts because a new screen was added or removed, clients can end
up being on a different screen than before the restart. However, the tags will
be carried across the restart. This means that a client could end up being
tagged with a tag from another screen. This results in weird behavior of tag
switches and confuses users.
To work around this, remove the client from any tags that are on a different
screen during startup. If the client ends up without any tags, it will then be
tagged with the currently selected tags.

Setting mouse.screen moves the pointer to the top left corner of that screen.
However, the very next line would then move the pointer elsewhere again. Thus,
the first one wasn't needed at all.

Since commit d8a93dafa3, tags have an "index" property which decides about
the order in which they are displayed in the taglist. If a tag doesn't have this
property set, the next call to awful.tag.gettags() will fix this and "invent" an
index for this new tag.
However, if multiple tags didn't have an "index" property, gettags() would
assign all of them the same index. The following call to table.sort() would then
do random magic to these tags (remember: table.sort() is not a stable sorting
algorithm, so it is allowed to randomly swap around entries which have the same
sorting key).
Fix this by making sure that the new "index" properties are different from each
other.

Having this in lua means that size hints are only applied after the client got
resized. The bad side effect of this is some flickering if awesome is being
slow. And apparently, it is slow for way too many people...

The (x,y) position of a client is outside of the border, but the width/height
does not include the border (so the real width is width+2*border).
This means that we have to also subtract 2*border to make sure that the client
including its border really is inside of the expected area.

No clue why this code is here, but it only allowed floating clients to be
resized beyond the edge of their screen. Clients on a floating layout were
forced to stay on their screen. Quite an unintuitive behavior and now this
behavior is gone.

The current code relied on some widget to cause a redraw when the focus changes.
Obviously, this assumption is wrong.
Instead, the code now uses the proper "focus" and "unfocus" signals for setting
titlebar colors, but it also needs to set these colors when a new titlebar is
created (v1 of this patch forgot that). For this reason, update_colors has to be
saved for when a titlebar's colors are updated.
This commit also reverts the ugly redraw_hook hack from commit a1918b8306.

When changing focus to an other screen, awful.screen.focus keeps relative
position of the cursor, instead of moving to the top left corner. Does not

When a property is now set to a function, the function's return value will be
used for the value of the property. The function gets the new client as its only
argument.
There is no property which accepts a function as its value and thus this change
can't break anything (yeah, famous last words...).
This should fix half of FS#1011. Panels now don't get focused by awful.rules.

Many themes have prerendered icons of different sizes stored in
subdirectories named as '<size>x<size>'. By looking in these directories
when a specific icon size is specified, we can support themes in a
rather straightforward way.

For example, I have some lua code which sets the border width based on the
number of visible clients. When just a single client is visible, the border
width is 0, else it's what the theme says.
Previously, this caused visible "glitches" for fullscreen'd and maximized
clients. This patch fixes that and updates the client's geometry and
border width appropriately.
This has a slight chance of going into an endless loop if someone sets a
fullscreen'd clients border width from its property::border_width signal.
Just don't do that!

Previously, setslave() put a client only at the end of the list of visible
clients. Obviously this means that it didn't do anything helpful if the target
client was not visible.
Fix this by iterating over all clients on the target screen instead of just the
visible ones.

This commit adds a new {bg,fg}_occupied option to the taglist. These control the
background and foreground color that unselected but occupied tags get in the
taglist. Occupied here means that at least one client is tagged with that tag.

The only caller of focus.history.add() should be the "focus" signal, so at that
time the unfocusable client already does have the focus. At that point, there is
no reason why this shouldn't be recorded in the focus history.
(And yes, unfocusable clients can be focused. Don't ask.)

changed_callback allows to execute arbitrary code any time the
command string changes.
keypressed_callback allows to intercept keypresses before
awful.prompt.run code handles them and run arbitrary code depending on
the key pressed and modificators.

I don't see why people would not want keyboard-enabled-menu by default.
Without it, you can't even use 'Escape' to quit the menu or press 'Enter' to
execute an entry. But instead of just enabling keyboard support by default, we
remove the option of disabling keyboard support altogether, which also
simplifies the implementation a bit.

Before this commit, a submenu was border_width pixels lower than its parent menu
entry. Fix this by not adding the border_width to the submenu's position.
We still have to add the border_width to the parent menu's width so that the
border of the submenu entry doesn't overlap the content of its parent menu (the
borders of the two menus do overlap!).

Initializing the client property "floating_geometry" on the
property::geometry signal is problematic since this is emitted before
client_set_border_width(), causing the internal client geometry to get
stored and later passed to client:geometry() which assumes it includes
titlebar and borders.

Tagging sticky clients shouldn't hurt anything, but it helps a lot if the client
later becomes unsticky. I'd have no tags in that case.

Instead of re-creating all the widgets for the list entries on each update, this
code now caches its widgets again and only creates new widgets when a new
client/tag appears.

Let's just quote the bug report:
A regression was introduced in commit f5a5af4001
which causes wiboxes to position themselves incorrectly on Xinerama screens
besides the first one. In lib/awful/wibox.lua.in line 49, function
set_position(), the screen number used to use wibox.screen but now just defaults
to 1. Since the screen parameter is never actually passed to set_position(),
that means that wiboxes will always use screen 1's geometry when determining the
proper position. So, if a different screen is larger or smaller or isn't aligned
with the primary screen, the wibox will either be offscreen or not on the edge.
This should be fixed by explicitly passing the right screen argument to all
functions which need it.

Apparently some people start a timer, switch to an empty tag and then let the
timer move a client to that empty tag. This change makes sure that this new
client will get the input focus in this case.

The menu was first made visible and then placed correctly. This caused a short,
black flicker in the top, left corner of the screen.
Fix this by removing a too early "visible = true".

So you want to make all Firefox windows floating except the main window
(instance = Navigator). You can either list all possible windows in
rules and make them floating, or make all of them floating except one:

When some client sets an invalid window title, a lua error was generated while
updating the tasklist. This caused all later tasklist entries to be skipped /
missing and the last entry to be empty.
Fix this by catching lua errors with pcall.

awful.placement.no_overlap caused clients on an otherwise empty desktop to stich
to the top-left corner of the screen because it always preferred the top-left
corner of the available space.
This commit doesn't change the way in which the available area is computed, but
instead this now tries to keep the client at its original position if that is
available.
This fixes cases where calling awful.placement.no_overlap as a callback from an
awful.rule rule didn't work because the manage signal in the default config
later overrode that via calling awful.placement.no_overlap.

This fixes a bug where the tasklist would still show its old content after a
client was minimized/unminized because it didn't connect to the appropriate
signal.
This wasn't noticed before, because in most cases minimizing a client also
unfocuses this client which causes a tasklist update.

awful.client.floating.get() does some sensible defaults. E.g. dialogs are
floating by default. Since floating.toggle only checked the property, these
defaults made it break.
So floating.toggle() should use floating.get to decide if a given client is
floating. It should also use "false" instead of "nil" when the client is made
non-floating or else the default will apply again.

When some client on the left monitor was closed while client.focus is on the
right monitor (e.g. 'sleep 5 ; exit' in a terminal), awful.autofocus would shift
the input focus to whatever client happened to be next in the focus history on
the left monitor.
Fix this by only ever moving the input focus between screens when a tag is
selected, not when some client does its magic.

setwfact() calls idx() on the client that it works on. When idx() is called with
a client that isn't visible, it fails while trying to find outs the client's
index in the current layout.

Fix this by ignoring all clients that aren't visible in setwfact().

By setting the textbox in an align layout's middle, the submenu icon will always
get the space it needs and the textbox will get the rest. Previously, the
textbox took as much as it wanted and the image got the rest. This looked ugly.

It seems like with lots of bad luck, the garbage collector manages to "steal"
the table with the buttons right after we decided to use it. Evil collector!

The data table is used to map objects (clients/tags) to the buttons associated
with them. This is done so that we don't have to re-create the button objects
each time this lists are updated.
The problem was that this weak-keyed table was never cleared, because the value
had a strong reference to the key (via the button's signal):
btn:connect_signal("press", function () b:emit_signal("press", o) end)
"o" is the key in the table and btn is reachable from the value. This prevented
the garbage collection of the key. Using a weak-keyed and weak-valued table
fixes this.

EWMH describes desktop windows like this:
"_NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP indicates a desktop feature. This can include a
single window containing desktop icons with the same dimensions as the screen,
allowing the desktop environment to have full control of the desktop, without
the need for proxying root window clicks."
An example for such a window is nautilus' virtual root window. Naturally, such a
window would always overlap with any given client, so awful.placement.no_overlap
just didn't do anything at all. The fix is to ignore such clients for placement
calculations.

If you entered a multi-byte character into a prompt and then changed your mind
and used backspace to fix the character, only the last byte of the character was
removed. Because pango is intelligent, it noticed the broken utf8 and
complained.
So far nothing new. But since 711d78b50c the textbox will throw a lua error
when it gets an invalid text (= pango complains). Throwing an unprotected lua
error in this context causes the keygrabber to be killed which stops the prompt.
Fix this by removing bytes as long as there are bytes left that can be removed.
This is FS#801.

Since 3fbb5f1535 "luaobject: emit signals on class too" when a signal
is emitted on some object, it will also be emitted on the class. This means that
we don't have to connect our signals via the "new" signal anymore, but can
instead connect to the signal on the class.
(Of course, the signal on the class gets as first argument the object on which
the signal was emitted)

Delete tags if certain criteria are met:
- There are no clients assigned exclusively to this tag.
- Stickied clients have somewhere to go, 'fb' the fallback tag
If after deleting there is no tag selected then try and
history.restore() or select the first tag on the screen.

The tasklist shouldn't care about the tag history or new tags showing up and it
also shouldn't care about tags disappearing on other screens (on the current
screen the tasklist needs to update because the tag might have been selected).
On the other hand, the tasklist really should care about tags being selected and
unselected. This worked before because this causes changes to the focus history.

Initial implementation of stacked graphs. Adds two new methods,
set_stack (false by default) and set_stack_colors (i.e. {"red",
"white", "blue"}). The order of the colors matters, because the
add_value method now accepts an (optional) last argument, an index of
a color from your stack color group.

Setting width or height (horizontal or vertical) to an arbitrary value
causes the wibox not to be stretched. Instead the align() function is
called, which might not modify any wibox property in many situations,
or none when align parameter was not provided by the user. The major
side effect is that wibox struts were never updated and clients
covered the wibox (until a first signal handler caused struts to be
updated).

Changing the width or height of a (right or bottom positioned)wibox,
after it was initialized, to a value different than used when it was
created would leave the wibox in a wrong position. Position was off by
as many pixels as the difference between the old and the new
value. Now every wibox is repositioned to reflect this new setup.

The awful.widget.graph allows to change the maximum value a graph can
handle, thus allows users to use widgets and scripts that don't scale
the values down to 0 - 1 range. The progressbars did not allow this
and worked with a hard-coded value of 1.

Commit 87070ca introduced support for access keys in menus. Chosen
character was "&", an XML entity that has potential to cause problems;
if a user tries to add multiple access keys or just put an ampersand
in the name of the item the menu will break. Breaking happened because
ampersands were not escaped - first one was substituted and the rest
were ignored, but not escaped which triggered a pango markup error.

Commit a757dda replaced the awful.client.movetotag call with c:tags()
in the tag property handler. Which introduced a regression when more
than one screen is used. The awful.tag.withcurrent function was being
called even when there was a valid tag property. Now the clients
screen is set to the tag screen to ensure the client is moved to the
correct tag and screen.

Changing screen focus to an empty tag leaves focus on a client on the
previous screen, if a tag with clients is focused next the focus
remains on the previous screen. Now awful.autofocus compares the tag
screen and clients screen to learn if the focus should be given to a
client on the focused screen. Client that gets the focus is selected
from history, as usual.

When both height and width arguments are provided to the function
new() there is a check to see if one of them was a screen percentage,
and is expected to be a string. If the user provided absolute pixels,
and argument is of type number awesome will crash. Now tostring is
used to sanitize the arguments during this check.

awful.wibox.align() in 3.4.x gets the available screen area from
capi.screen[screen].geometry.
this can easily result in overlapping wiboxes since the work area
provided does not account for existing wiboxes.
In my configuration I use a vertical wibox positioned at the
right and it half-overlaps my top wibox because it is streched and
hard-coded to align at the middle.

Function wibox_update_strut would not take the border width into
account when calculating struts. When a wibox border was in use
clients would overlap the wibox. With a border of 1px we loose 1px of
the wibox, but as the wibox border increases it is "pushed" by the
border nearest the screen edge and clients steal more and more space.

Commit 6c5d0ca9 introduced a side effect. If tooltip text isn't changed
place() function is not called. To prevent multiple place() set_geometry
calls that function when tooltip is not visible (before it appears to the
user).

Functions show() and toggle() accept a boolean parameter controlling
keyboard navigation. In case of the clients menu neither is called
directly, instead the clients menu is always re-created in case any
new clients appeard since the last invocation. This patch adds a
keygrabber parameter to the clients() function as well.

You can define a menuitem like before:
awful.menu({ items = { { "&awesome", myawesomemenu,
beautiful.awesome_icon },
{ "open &terminal", terminal },
})
and the letters following the ampersand in itemname can be used as
access key. (at least former fvwm users might find this familiar)
When there are submenus open awesome ascends during the search from the
current menu to the top level menu.
The access key is shown underlined.
There is no warning for multiple used keys, only the first one found
gets the price.

We check the wibox border width for inappropiate values now, if we set
border_width to a negative value (invalid) in our theme and draw it, the
actual border_width will be 0 so the menu will be drawn incorrectly.
This fixed this.

There might be multiple screens with visible windows. When closing the
last window of the current screen, try to focus them as well.
If no window has focus and yet some windows are visible (e.g. on another
screen), awesome misbehaves: it uses sloppy keyboard focus (as is the X11
default), but doesn't refresh their border colors or tasklists etc.

This fixes a long standing tag history breakage. To store history
of tag switching we rely on a special signal "tag::history::update"
which needs to be emitted by any function which deals with tag
selection.
History is multi-level with a configurable limit:
awful.tag.history.limit = 20 (by default).
awful.tag.history.restore function gets a new argument 'idx' which can
be either 'previous' (default) which will revert to the previously
selected set of tags, or a numerical index in the tag history table.

awful.widget.graph and progressbar both create an imagebox. The default is
resize = true which means the image is scaled up inside the wibox if
:set_height() is used.
Setting widget.resize = false avoids this.

This code accesses these functions via _M['set_height'], but if these are local
functions they aren't available this way. Un-local-ing helps here.
This was noticed by anrxc when he set a widget's height to 0.9. These functions
should have caught this invalid height and ignore it, but because they weren't
actually used this error checking was bypassed.

If this is set to true (default is false), then the graph widget automatically
scales its content to make it fit exactly. If "max_value" is also set, this is
the minimum "height" the graph will use.
This can be useful for graphes which monitor things like network bandwidth
which can vary a lot.

This patch fixes a bug and changes the position handling for wiboxes:
The bug was that awful.wibox.set_position() didn't update the cached
wibox position, i.e. the wibox was moved, but the position value in the
wiboxes table stayed the same
The change in position handling was that unknown positions (i.e.
"fnord") default to "floating"

My local config got a module which denies functions from adding new functions
to the global context or to a module's local context. I use this for catching
typos (think misspelled variable names).
This patch "fixes" a false-positive which was caused by this.

awful.client.toggletag assumes that the tags array is indexed by tag
objects. This appears to not be the case after v3.2-31-g6430738, when
client objects stopped using otables. This patch makes toggletag iterate
through the client tag array till it finds the entry to remove,
otherwise it appends the new entry at the end.

Fix a wrong assertian that actually:
function a() return 1, 2, 3 end
c = { a(), a() }
Won't make #c == 6 but c == 4 because only the last call to a() will
fill the table with 3 results.

This is a new version of 'titlebar.lua'. There are now additional buttons for:
- setting the 'ontop' attribute
- setting the 'sticky' attribute
- maximizing the client
In addition to changing the state of the client the buttons also show if the
corresponding state is active for a client. All new buttons now require 4
images for:
- unfocused window, state inactive (i.e. ontop == false)
- unfocused window, state active (i.e. ontop == true)
- focused window, state inactive (i.e. ontop == false)
- focused window, state active (i.e. ontop == true)
It's not difficult to add more buttons with any kind of functionality. User
configuration is currently restricted to theming of the buttons. Buttons are
disabled simply by not configuring them in the theme. The icons for the new
buttons are taken from kde4. They're not really pretty but they're OK to
demonstrate the new features.

- WINDOW_TYPE_DOCK are chosen first.
- Top/Bottom take precedence over Left/Right.
- Struts are automatically updated.
- Automatically avoid overlap with other struts or wibox'es.

Just a minor change: since capi.awesome.spawn does a double fork, there
is no need to use a '&' to background the spawned process.

This prevents from having table clash.
Please udate you configuration according this feature in your
awful.prompt.run() calls.
If keywords parameter is missing then no completion would be
done.

- In many places i see people correcting for border width and titlebars.
- This new definition is the equivilant of what used to be fullgeometry.
- The internal geometry is now contained to a few functions that few people ever touch.
- This should avoid confusion and make code easier.
- Also protect against several unsigned overflows.

kw_feeder sould return a key = value dictionnary. Completion is run against
key. Once completion is done, exe_callback(value, key) is executed.
That's the major differences between awful.prompt.run() and
awful.prompt.completion_run
Notice: This is not thread safe but as longs as only one keygrabber could be
run who cares?

Adds a trailing space after text if cursor position < text length to
prevent width of the widget changing particularly useful when using
'text' and 'selectall' to do eg. in-place renaming.

If set along with 'text' (prefilled content) it will position the cursor at
the beginning of the line and and on text input (and not control keys,
arrows, etc.) will overwrite the prefilled content with the new input.

Made changes to lib/awful/widget.lua.in to accept the following additional
customizations through theme or arguments to taglist/tasklist labeling
functions:
* args.squares_resize/theme.taglist_squares_resize (Boolean, default = true)
If true, taglist icons are resized; otherwise, they aren't.
* args.floating_icon_align/theme.floating_icon_align (String, default = "right")
Controls the alignment of the icon drawn in the tasklist for floating clients.

This removes the C implementation of taglist and tasklist widgets and
use a Lua one.
This works by letting .widgets property of wiboxes to be a table with
table, and setting a special metatable on them which notify awesome on
newindex events, updating wiboxes.

This commit changes various aspects of awful.util and invaders:
awful.util:
- added awful.util.getdir(d)
This function takes one argument and returns a matching directory,
as of now, only "cache" is supported. The return value is either
$XDG_CACHE_HOME/awesome/ or $HOME/.cache/awesome/, XDG_CACHE_HOME
takes precedence
invaders:
- renamed invaders to awesome invaders
at two places in the sourcecode, invaders is referred to as
"Space Invaders for Awesome". As Taiko holds the trademark for
the term "Space Invaders", I changed both of its occurences to
"Awesome Invaders" to avoid conflicts with the law of Japan and
the United States of America (and possibly others)
- added support for XDG_CACHE_HOME
this change adds support for XDG_CACHE_HOME as the cache directory
for highscores and screenshots
- added some parameters to invaders.run()
this change adds three parameters to invaders.run, supplied as a
table. They are "x", "y" and "solidbg".
"x" sets the X coordinate of the playfield
"y" sets the Y coordinate of the playfield
"solidbg" sets the color of the playfield background for people who
have problems with transparency. This still looks rather hackish and
needs to be polished
- changed startup position
up until now, invaders always started at (100,100) on the first
screen, now it starts centered to the screen on which the mouse cursor
is.
Modules beautiful and widget are required by the titlebar:
* beautiful to retrieve theme details
* widget for the buttons

Works similar to focus.bydirection, but swaps windows instead.
Also, added a generic local method get_client_in_direction for
use by (swap|focus)\.?bydirection.
